Hermes Agent Google Chat Setup with a Service Account
To connect Hermes Agent to Google Chat, create a Google Cloud project, enable the Google Chat API, configure the chat app with a service account, and add the app to a Workspace space. Then send one message in a direct message with the app to prove the connection before adding it to a team space.
- 01
Create a Google Cloud project
Create a dedicated project for the assistant so billing, quotas, and audit logs stay separate from your other services.
- 02
Enable the Google Chat API
Turn on the Chat API in the project, then open the Configuration tab where the chat app identity is defined.
- 03
Configure the app and service account
Set the app name, avatar, and description, choose the service account the app runs as, and define how the assistant receives messages.
- 04
Deploy Hermes Agent with Google Chat selected
Choose a model, select Google Chat as the channel, paste the service account credentials, and start the deployment.
- 05
Test a direct message
In Google Chat, open a direct message with the app and send a short question. One reply confirms the Chat API, credentials, and runtime.
- 06
Add the app to a test space
Only after the direct message works, add the assistant to one space and confirm it can read and post there.
Four-step path
How do you connect Hermes Agent to Google Chat?
Five checkpoints: create the Cloud project, enable the Chat API, configure the app with a service account, deploy with the credentials, then test a direct message.

What do you need before connecting Google Chat?
You need a Google Workspace account, permission to create a Google Cloud project, and rights to configure a Chat app. Consumer Google accounts cannot install custom Chat apps.
Google Chat apps are a Workspace feature. If your organization restricts third-party apps, an administrator must allow the app before anyone can add it to a space.
Why use a service account for the Google Chat app?
A service account gives the assistant a stable, non-human identity with scoped permissions. It can be rotated, audited, and revoked without touching any employee account.
- Create the service account inside the same Cloud project as the Chat app.
- Download the key once and store it as a secret, not in a shared drive.
- Grant only the Chat-related roles the assistant needs.
- Record the service account email so access reviews are easy.
Why does the Google Chat app not answer?
The usual causes are the Chat API not being enabled, an app configuration that was never saved, a service account key that was deleted, or the organization blocking the app.
- Confirm the Chat API is enabled in the correct Cloud project.
- Re-save the app configuration after changing the connection mode.
- Check that the service account key has not expired or been revoked.
- Ask an administrator whether the app is allowed by Workspace policy.
How should the assistant behave in shared spaces?
Answer only when mentioned, keep replies short enough for a chat thread, and require approval before the assistant posts anything that looks like an announcement.
Spaces are shared by default, so an over-eager assistant is visible to the whole room. Mention-only behaviour is the safest default for a first rollout.
Does Google Chat add cost on top of the Hermes Agent plan?
The Chat API itself has no separate license for standard message handling, but model usage still bills through your Hermes Agent plan or your own provider key.
The main lever on cost is the model you choose and how much context the assistant reads per message. A smaller model with a narrow scope is usually enough for a chat assistant.

Direct answers
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a personal Google account?
No. Custom Google Chat apps require a Google Workspace account and an administrator who allows the app.
Where do I get the Google Chat credentials?
From the service account you create in the same Google Cloud project that hosts the Chat app configuration.
Can the assistant read every message in a space?
Only what the app is permitted to see and configured to process. Restrict the assistant to mentions when you want the smallest possible scope.
Does the assistant work in direct messages and spaces?
Yes. Direct messages are the recommended first test because they remove space membership and permission variables.
Key takeaways
- To connect Hermes Agent to Google Chat, create a Google Cloud project, enable the Google Chat API, configure the chat app with a service account, and add the app to a Workspace space. Then send one message in a direct message with the app to prove the connection before adding it to a team space.
- Start with one model, one channel, and one controlled test conversation.
- Use managed hosting when deployment speed matters more than operating the server yourself.
